Foreshadowing In "The Lottery"

 Foreshadowing In «The Lottery» Essay

Foreshadowing in The Lottery In the short story The Lottery, (reprinted in Perrine's Literary works: Structure, Sound, and Impression, 7th ed. [Fort Worth: Harcourt, 1998] 421) Shirley Jackson depicts a special day, 06 27, inside the lives in the inhabitants of a small , evidently serene small town. The use of foreshadowing is used extensively to hint to the reader that despite the apparently festive event, there is something morbid about the lottery that triggers the people with the town to get uneasy. Jackson foreshadows the ironic bottom line with specific examples and both threatening and tense diction.

The first indication in the peculiarity in the day's lotto is the very little boys experienced " previously stuffed [their] pockets filled with stones" (422). One sees that a lotto in contemporary societies absolutely does not involve rocks, so the idea that the town's lottery is much diverse from the ones noted in today's world can be introduced. The truth that the males who begin to gather for the lottery stand " away from the heap of stones" shows that the stones are certainly not a jovial part of the day's events (422). These good examples give the visitor the idea that you will discover something important, however shady regarding the heap of rocks. And even though the men advised jokes, " they smiled rather than laughed" (422). In the event the lottery was obviously a carefree event, the men would have had not a problem with laughing. The description of the actions of the group of men creates the impression that the lottery is a significant event which is not about laughing matters.

During the lottery, after most of the guys had chosen and driven their recycle of daily news, they seated " turning them again and again nervously" (425). If the lottery was being done to give away some sort of reward or prize, they might have looked eager, certainly not nervous. Jackson also identifies the way Mr. Summers and Mr. Adams grin each and every other as " nervously" (425). The repetition from the word worried reinforces that the lottery is definitely not one of fun and games. In addition , Mrs. Dunbar's...
