Jonathon Kozol, the writer of Illiterate America in 85, takes time to examine Illiteracy and poverty in the usa and he wrote a Novel in 1988 called " The Destitute and Their Children” where He advised a story of your woman and her four children referred to as Joanne (Kozol, 1985). Jonathan spent time and effort to get to know Rachel and her children who have lived in a homeless lodge in New york city called the Martinique, that has been located for Sixth Method and 25 Second Streets. This hotel was considered to be the largest motel for the homeless persons in Ny. Jonathan Kozol was enlightening the facts that there were numerous homeless and illiterate people in America, giving the important points that at least 1 / 3rd of American individuals were influenced. With Joanne's illiteracy your woman couldn't read her email, didn't understand if it was important or perhaps if it involved her children and this produced her incredibly scared not knowing if your woman did the ideal thing on her children. Martinique Hotel houses over four hundred hundred families and 1200 children. The hotel by itself is in a very dilapidated condition, and it's just like living in the slum. The conditions in the lodge were terrible, from wall space that are were crumbling covered in lead based paint, to domestic plumbing issues inside the bathroom that has made organic sewage stand in pools on to the floor, This was a dreadful problem intended for Joanne and her kids. They had some beds set up in one area that were in unprotected pickup bed frames, which will made a very unsafe pertaining to the children to sleep on. Joanne had a rad that is was spewing hot steam which was located in eye level to some in the children. The crib on her youngest child who is only just months older was falling separate; this made Joanne bothered for his safety. There are green mold looking smudges all over the surfaces from dripping plumbing in the rooms previously mentioned hers.
